When Masami Kurumada was in the process of creating Saint Seiya, at first gave the name of the protagonist Rin, since Kurumada was going to title his manga Ginga no Rin (Rin of the Galaxy).
However, to further develop their manga, Kurumada decided to change the name of the protagonist and named Seiya whose name is composed of two kanji: 星 (Sei), which means star and 矢 (I), which means arrow, which in together result in "Arrow Star", referring to the shooting stars or comets, concepts related to character, and so his zodiac sign, Sagittarius.
Finally, once developed the concept of the saints, changed the title of his manga Saint Seiya. Also, Kurumada stated that one of the first ideas he conceived for Saint Seiya was the special technique of Seiya, Pegasus Ryusei Ken (Pegasus Meteor), with frequent recourse to the issue of the constellations and Greek mythology.
When Kurumada designed Seiya, was inspired by one of his own characters: Ryūji Takane, star of the manga Ring ni Kakero, created nine years before Saint Seiya. Moreover, most of the protagonists of his sleeves resemble Ryūji because Kurumada refers to the technique used by Osamu Tezuka, Star System, based on having a "cast" stable of characters to different works. The same procedure is done with most other characters in the serie.
